SHANGHAI
Shanghai was once called the Paris of the East. It was the epitome of glamour, a city of quick riches, ill-gotten gains and fortunes lost: the domain of adventurers, swindlers, gamblers, drug runners, idle rich, dandies, tycoons, missionaries, gangsters and backstreet pimps; the city that plots revolution and dances as the revolution shoots it way into town.
Regarded with suspicion by the central government as a hotbed of Western imperialist influence, the city has for decades played second fiddle to Beijing . Today, Shanghai is catching up with a vengeance. The government is putting millions into the Pudong economic zone creating a skyline of glass and steel that rivals the Bund across the river. In a face off between the past and the future, Shanghai is now the world largest construction site.
The city is also busily dusting off its cummerbund. With its Grand Restaurants, Bars and Nightclubs it is an amazing city of nightlife. Strains of all kinds of music fill the streets to accommodate the new Latin Dance craze and a return of S wing-era of the 30's. Live bands and D.J 's with their rock/pop/retro/funk/ and disco/blues/jazz offerings entertain the young and old.
Shanghai is a city of the world. Some believe the 21st century will be dominated by China and Shanghai is poised to lead the way as its most economically, ideological and socially open city. Today the visitor can experience all of the luxuries of China and the comforts of home in five-star hotels, grand restaurants and cultural sights. This is a city typifying the huge disparities of modern China . Monumental building projects push skyward, glinting department stores swing open their doors to the stylish elite, while the beggars, prostitutes and impoverished roam the streets and alleys.
History is returning to haunt Shanghai and at the same time to put it squarely on the map. Shanghai lies in central eastern China and is the gateway to the Yangtze River that flows into the East China Sea. The city is divided into two main areas, Pudong and Puxi, which lie east and west of the Huangpu River . Pudong is Shanghai 's financial and business district, as well as the home of The Shanghai Stock Exchange, Shanghai World Financial Centre, the International Conference Centre, the International Trade Centre and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
The Bund (Waitan), the city's famous waterfront boulevard lined with turn-of-the-century buildings is a favorite tourist attraction. Jade Buddha Temple , the most famous Buddhist temple in Shanghai, is located in the west part of the city and houses two magnificent jade Buddhas, carved out of a single piece of white jade.
