This ESL activity helps students practise forming and recognising tag questions. It provides controlled practice in matching sentence stems with appropriate question tags and includes a fun memory game to reinforce the structure.
Activity Overview
- Level: Pre-intermediate / Intermediate
- Target language: Question tags (e.g. don’t you?, is he?, aren’t they?)
- Time: 15–20 minutes
- Group size: Individual, pairs, or small groups
What you need
- One copy of the worksheet per pair or group (download here)
How to use the activity
- Before class, cut up the worksheet so that each sentence stem and question tag is on a separate card.
- In class, give each pair or group a full set of cut-up cards.
- Students match each sentence with the correct tag. For example:
- You like fish – don’t you?
- He isn’t happy – is he?
- They aren’t here – are they?
- Once all pairs are matched correctly, students mix them up and play a memory game:
- Lay all cards face down in a grid.
- Student A turns over two cards. If they match (sentence + correct tag), they keep the pair and have another turn.
- If the cards don’t match, the turn passes to the next student.
- The player with the most matched pairs at the end wins.
