China Homestay Tutoring Program

Our Homestay Tutoring program in China

Immerse yourself in Chinese culture by living with a friendly and welcoming host family while teaching English and learning Mandarin.

As a live-in English tutor, you’ll dedicate 30 hours per week to teaching and assisting with childcare, gaining firsthand experience of day-to-day life in a Chinese family. As well as teaching English to the host family's children, your responsibilities may include helping them with homework, accompanying them to school and outings, playing, shopping, and even travelling with your host family.

This unique opportunity allows you to embrace a new culture, tackle challenges, and broaden your horizons. You'll be treated as a member of the family, participating in cultural activities and daily routines, all while learning Mandarin and creating lasting connections.

Positions are available in Shanghai and other major cities.

What's included?

Here's what's included in our China Homestay Tutoring program:

  • Placement with a host family

    Placements are between 3 and 12 months in Shanghai and other major cities.

  • Pre-departure support

    Visa and documentation support, coordination with host family.

  • Orientation upon arrival

    Including airport pickup and a welcome package.

  • Support during your stay

    Including Mandarin classes, cultural activities and a 24/7 helpline.

  • Monthly stipend and flight reimbursement

    1500 RMB (around £160) a month stipend and flight reimbursement up to 12000 RMB (around £1300).

  • Free housing and meals

    Private room in your host family's house and meals with the host family included.

  • Holiday and days off

    1.5 days off per week and 1 day paid holiday per month of the placement.

  • Warm welcome from your host family

    Be welcomed as part of the family and participate in their daily life.

Requirements

To be eligible for our China Homestay Tutoring program, here are the requirements:

  • 17-30 years old
  • Completed secondary school or above
  • Native speaker or proficient in English
  • No criminal record
  • Open to cultural differences
  • Experience of teaching English or caring for children

Program cost

Tutors do not pay any program fees to participate in the Program. However, our partner Wanderlust Exchange does require a downpayment of $100 USD to hold your position once you have been accepted into the program and matched with a host family. This is returned to you upon your completion of the program.
