List of TEFL scams and warnings

This page lists all of the scams (and companies with unscrupulous business practices) we’ve identified in the last 10 years. If you become aware of a scam not on this list, or have an update to one already on the list, please let us know.

  • "Rubaj Recruitment", Saudi Arabia

We’ve had reports of a scam involving “Rubaj Recruitment”, who list variations of the following in job postings:

“We are looking for ESL/English Teachers and we will offer you a fully supported working experience with High Monthly salary with Free 2ways economy class Air ticket, free furnished 3 bedroom Apartment, Free Medical Insurance and Free Teaching Materials plus Feeding Allowance.
Employees will receive 30 days Paid Vacation per year on top of the already stipulated holidays (national holidays and Saturdays and Sundays).

They offer an unrealistically high salary plus a car, and then ask for payment to an immigration agent for a visa.

They may now be posing as “Rashid Language School”, perhaps with an email signature directing you to “Rashid School for Boys” in Dubai (a legitimate school in Dubai). If a teacher applies, and then finds out that it is a scam and alerts the scammer to this fact, the scammer then threatens to publish the teacher’s personal details online. He then proceeds to send an email to various recruitment sites and other random email addresses, saying that the teacher is a scammer!

This scam is focused on getting teachers to the stage of contacting the “travel agent” and sending the processing fee. Needless to say, after that point, they do not hear from them again. Please do not have any contact with this individual, do not send him copies of passports or other documents, and do not send a processing fee to the travel agency.

Please also be aware that the scammer may use different names and/or change the name of the “travel agency” or other details.

  • Thomas Gren, LG UPlus Corporation / Marcus Ekman, Dexerials Corporation, October 2022

The original scam, in October 2021: We received an alert from a teacher who was contacted after posting their profile on an ESL website.

The teacher was contacted by someone calling themselves Thomas Gren, claiming to be the HR Manager at LG UPlus Corporation. The email was sent from hrdesk@lgupluscorp.com. LG Uplus is a telecommunications company in South Korea, but has the domain uplus.co.kr, not lgupluscorp.com.

They offered a flexible online Business English teaching position of 10-20 hours per week at $50/hour. The teacher sent their CV and cover letter and arranged an interview online via Skype. Within 3 hours of the interview they were offered the job and sent a contract to sign. They were also asked to approach the Asia Bureau Service in South Korea (www.asiabureauhq.com, info@asiabureauservice.com).

The teacher noticed the following red flags:

    1. All the emails were very generic and not addressed to the teacher personally
    2. The video for the Skype interview was very low resolution, with no audio.
    3. The interviewer (Thomas Gren) then communicated via the chat (IM) function stating that the connection appeared to be poor and that the teacher should try and call him back on Skype. This didn’t work, so he asked if he could send the teacher a list of questions. This list arrived on LG UPlus company letterhead. The teacher was asked if they could record video with their answers.
    4. Within just 2 hours of the interview the teacher received an email with a job offer.
    5. The teacher received the contract, which contained rather generic conditions more suited to a permanent employment contract and not a remote online job (such as housing allowance, etc.)
    6. The teacher received communication from the Asia Bureau Office and the Consulate from their home country, informing them that they needed to complete an application for some sort of security clearance. The timeframe for all this correspondence was just a couple of hours – a questionably quick turnaround time for such departments in the teacher’s home country.
    7. There is no mention of a Thomas Gren working at LG based on a quick search.
    8. The teacher was asked to pay around 800 Euros for the security check, using Moneygram to somewhere in Turkey (for a job with a South Korean company).
    9. The pay was $50/hour – very high.
    10. When the teacher contacted all of the above contacts informing them of these suspicions, no reply was received.

Update, October 2022: – We received the following email from a teacher:

SAME SCAM UNDERWAY! NEW NAME – VERY PROFESSIONAL

Contacted by Sandy Qui (qisandy3@gmail.com) to email Marcus Ekman at Dexerials Corporation in Japan (hrdesk@dexerialscorp.com)

Marcus claiming to be the HR Manager. The email was sent from hrdesk@dexerialscorp.com. Dexerials is an electronic company in Japan, but has the domain .jp, not .com.

They offered a flexible online Business English teaching position of 10-20 hours per week at $50/hour. The teacher sent their CV and cover letter and arranged an interview online via Skype. Within 3 hours of the interview they were offered the job and sent a contract to sign. They were also asked to approach the Asia Bureau Service in Japan (https://asiabureauservices.com/ and info@asiabureauservice.com). Was asked NOT to use GMAIL due to VPN issues.

    Following red flags:

    1. All the emails were very generic and not addressed to the teacher personally.
    2. The video for the Skype interview was very low resolution, with no audio.
    3. The interviewer (Marcus Ekman) then communicated via the chat (IM) function stating that the connection appeared to be poor and that the teacher should try and call him back on Skype. This didn’t work, so he asked if he could send the teacher a list of questions. This list arrived on Dexerials company letterhead. The teacher was asked if they could record video with their answers.
    3. Within just 2 hours of the interview the teacher received an email with a job offer.
    4. The teacher received the contract, which contained rather generic conditions more suited to a permanent employment contract and not a remote online job (such as housing allowance, etc.)
    5. I received communication from the Asia Bureau Office and MY SOUTH AFRICAN CONSULAR NATIONAL SERVICES (legalisation@dirco.gov.za ) informing me that they needed to complete an application for some sort of security clearance. The timeframe for all this correspondence was just a couple of hours – a questionably quick turnaround time for such departments in my country. NOTE THEY MUST HAVE HACKED INTO THE GOV WEBSITE BECAUSE THIS IS THE CORRECT .gov.za ADDRESS!
    6. There is no mention of a Marcus Ekman working at Dexerials based on a quick search.
    7. I was asked to pay USD810 for the security check to a Japanese Mizhuo bank account.
    8. The pay was $50/hour – very high.

  • Teachingchina.net, January 2022

It has been brought to our attention that an employer called Teachingchina.net could be selling confidential information of applicants on their website. We strongly advise not responding to any job adverts from teachingchina.net, who advertise with the email address fred.ou@teachingchina.net.

  • Momentum Recruitment, South Korea, March 2021

A likely scam has been brought to our attention.

A company called Momentum Recruitment has been posting job adverts for English teaching positions with schools in South Korea. The recruiter uses the name Ethan Parks, with the email address info@momentumrecruitment.xyz.

The recruiter takes applicants through an interview process, contract signing, and visa and flight arrangements, using what appear to be fake contracts with schools and fake travel itineraries. They give the option of arranging the visa and flight for the teacher, wait for the teacher to pay for these, and then disappear.

This appears to be a very sophisticated operation, with a “foreign coordinator” even telling teachers what to pack and sending pictures of the apartment where the teacher will be living.

The teaching contract they create uses the name of a real school, and the flight itinerary uses the name of a real travel agent. The teacher who brought this to our attention contacted both the school and the travel agent directly, who confirmed that these documents were fake, said that they had received several other enquiries from others who had been scammed, and that they had never heard of Momentum Recruitment or Ethan Parks.

  • Dwells family, London, March 2020

Job posts have recently been made on TEFL jobs sites by the “Dwells Family”, looking for an English tutor and nanny for their children in London. We would advise against any contact with this person.

  • Employer claiming to be the English School of Casale, Italy, May 2019

We have received reports that a scammer has been posting adverts on jobs boards claiming to represent the English School of Casale in Italy.

The person goes by the name of Nando Prigione, provides fake contracts and asks teachers for money for visa fees. He uses the email address englishschool.it@gmail.com.

We received the following from a teacher:

“I am one of the victims. The ‘real’ school at Casale Monferrato has a warning about this on their web page, and I am not the first victim. They seem to target those who are not EU nationals. However, they tell me that other smaller schools have likewise been fraudulently represented. The way you can know for sure is if they put you in contact with a so-called immigration attorney called Luca Andrea, who does not exist. Be warned – these people can be very convincing with receipts and details.”

  • Employer claiming to be Empower Training Idiomas in Barcelona, Spain, April 2019

Someone claiming to represent Empower Training (Idiomas) in Barcelona has posted fake job adverts recently. The contact details given by this individual are as follows:

    Mr. Patrick Healy
    C/ Diputació, 107, 08015 Barcelona, Spain.
    Teléfono: +34 92 618 00 10
    Fax: 93 323 76 60
    Skype: empoweridiomas.com@gmail.com

The real Empower Training have confirmed that this is a scam, as they do not have a centre at that address.

  • Engr Qiang Family, December 2018

Job posts have recently been made on TEFL jobs sites by the “Engr Qiang Family”, supposedly from China and recently moved to the UK, looking for an English tutor. The main warning sign is the pay – £4500 a month. This is in addition to “Quality single or family housing upon your arrival.” We advise against any contact with this individual.

  • OYE Optimize Your English in Cartagena, Spain, September 2018

People claiming to represent “OYE Optimize Your English” language school in Cartagena are currently operating what appears to be a scam:

    1. They are asking teachers for money upfront for visas and accommodation (in the region of 700 euros in total)
    2. The job offer is far too good to be true: 2700€ monthly salary, free furnished accommodation, 5 working hours 5 days weekly, return ticket reimbursement
    3. They seem to also be putting teachers in contact with a Spanish immigration lawyer (spain-visas.com/spanish-lawyers.php3) who asks for payment of a visa fee of 190 euros
    4. Their poorly designed website (oyeenglish.es) only provides a mobile phone number
    5. Their Facebook page has not been updated since 2015 and has very limited information, no community interaction or photos

There may be a link between this scam and another, Academie de Français Neus Fransi. Teachers are being directed from one school to the other, under the guise of them being “affiliated schools”.

    Response from the genuine school:

    Hi
As owner of OYE I was really disturbed to learn that someone has been scamming people by pretending to offer jobs.
Please be clear that we have reported this to the police and asked Google to close down the fraudulent web page.
I took on board the comments re our web page and poor design. Hopefully it looks better now, we are a small school which focuses on preparing high standard course material rather than marketing ourselves. Obviously we need to improve a few things!!
Also we have no fixed phone line as this would be another cost which would be reflected in class prices.
Our objective is to provide small classes of a high standard at a reasonable price.
  • Colombian family living in Scotland scam, September 2018

Adverts have recently been posted on TEFL websites by someone claiming to be from Colombia, living with his family in Scotland, offering an outrageously high salary for an EFL teacher for his family. Here’s an example of an advert posted:

    “Dear Teacher

I trust you are doing great! I am Evang Pab from Cucuta and presently residing here in the United Kingdom with
My family which comprises of my wife Sara, and two kids by name, Mia, and Gael

I am in need of an English teacher to come and teach my wife and kids for a period of one year here before they can enroll for formal education, Compensation and Benefits Package.: A very attractive monthly salary of is GBP6,000 Paid monthly, Quality single or family housing upon your arrival here, medical insurance, vacation allowance etc…

If you are interested in coming to work for me kindly send me your detailed resume and cover letter to evang_pabyesid@live.com
Thank you for your anticipated response…

    Cheers
    Evang Pab”

We advise against any contact with this person.

Here is another email from “Evang Pab” to one teacher, in which he asks about a work visa to work in the UK, even though the teacher’s CV had clearly stated that she was a British citizen. This suggests that the scam might be asking for money for processing visas:

    “Dear —
    Nice hearing from you.
Do you have work/residential permit visa to use here?
    cheers
    Evang Pab”

We received the following from a teacher:

“I have been in contact with this individual. Please share any additional information you may have, such as what did he ask for, e.g., money, bank account information, etc. The more details you can share, the better informed everyone will be. Simply telling us what he advertised or that he may “potentially” be asking for money to process a visa, does not tell us whether or not he actually HAS requested any personal information or money. I’m trying to get more details from this potential scammer so I can share it on the forum, but so far he has not asked for anything that makes me overly cautious. I do not want to wrongly accuse someone of doing anything amiss until I have all the facts. Thanks!”

  • Scammer claiming to represent Docklands Idiomas in Spain, June 2018

A scammer has recently been posting job adverts either for Docklands Idiomas in Barcelona, Spain, or for Academie De Francais Neus Fransi, which he then claims is a school affiliated with Docklands Idiomas.

He uses the Skype name docklandsidiomas.com@gmail.com and has gone as far as to interview one prospective teacher by Skype.

It seems this scammer, who calls himself Dennis Grau, is requesting money and/or documents from teachers.

This scammer has absolutely nothing to do with Docklands Idiomas.

The real Docklands Idiomas website can be found at http://www.docklandsidiomas.com/.

  • Employer claiming to be Sprakeschool in Zaragoza, Spain, May 2018

A scammer is using the name of Sprake School to post fake job adverts on TEFL jobs sites. The owner of the school reports that the scammer has engaged in identity theft to do this, and is conning teachers into paying deposits for visas, flats and travel expenses for a non-existent job.

The scammer also appears to be enticing non-EU citizens with the promise of an easy route in to working in the EU and obtaining a visa.

If you see an advert for Sprake School on a TEFL jobs site, please be aware of this, and note the warning the Sprake School has published on their site:

“We are not hiring through other websites, we are victims of an internet scam. Contact us only through this webpage.”

The website for the real Sprake School in Zaragoza is http://www.sprakeschool.es/.

  • Employers claiming to recruit for First Class Language School in Spain, June 2017

First Class Language School in Spain have put a notice on their website (https://www.myfirstclass.es/) saying that individuals have been illegally claiming to represent them to offer jobs to teachers.

These individuals then ask for an upfront payment – we received an email from one teacher who had a request for such a payment:

“The visa fee is to be paid to the cashier via money transfer (Money Gram, Western Union or Ria Money Transfer ) with the below details.

    Payment Details.
    Cashier’s name: Name-***
    (Name-***)
    Office address: Málaga, 5516, Spain.

Do e-mail us with the payment receipt after payment. “

Please be aware of anyone claiming to represent First Class Language School, and read the notice on their website first.

  • Bamenda University, Cameroon, May 2016

We received the following from a teacher:

Hello, very new to the site and wanted to share this. I applied for a job on a different site for a job teaching in Ghana. They set up a skype interview and during the interview the man had said that job is taken but there is a job opening in Cameroon. I thought about it. I am adventurous by nature. This same scam seems to have been talked about on this same forum before. They said they will pay $1000/week net pay.

This same job is now being advertised so beware!! They told me that I had to pay three months rent in advance in order to live in Cameroon. Was pressured very hard to sign. Oh, and by the way, they were offering plane tickets for two extra people as well. Just the South African job in Cape Town.

Please let me know if you hear from these people. The man’s name is Hardo Ibrahim.

    Thanks,
    Duane

  • Employer claiming to be Segi University, Malaysia, May 2015

We received the following from a teacher:

“I applied for a job at Segi University. It was listed on several ESL job board sites and the initial email was sent to info@segiuni.org. If you click on the link in the adverts, it does take you to the school’s legit website.

I was given a Skype interview, but no video. The contact was listed as Segi Uni. After a few days, I received a job offer, which requested a guarantee fee. I replied that I would like details and would like to talk to current teachers. I then went to the website and clicked on the contact us page. I noticed that the email address was slightly different @segi.edu.my. So I sent an email and asked if they had an hr representative by the name of Yong Vafa and did I receive an offer from their university.
I received a reply email from Jason Liew stating that there was no such person working at Segi and many people had become trapped by this issue. I want to let people know because if you google Segi University of Yong Vafa nothing comes up.”

The scammer has created an almost identical copy of the real website of the school:

    Scammer’s site: http://stgilgenintlschool.com/
    Genuine school site: http://www.stgis.at/

The salary of 2700 euros a month tax-free is another warning sign.

The scammer also requests a reimbursable upfront payment of 2000 euros to “protect the school”.

Here’s an email recevied by one applicant requesting this upfront payment:

    “Dear _____,

    Received from teachers:

“Thank you for the information. I applied for the same job and went through the whole process and sent in my resume and copy of degrees. I even got a call for an interview and the call came from the St Gilgen school number and i did some research and found out that scammers spoof telephone numbers and hide the number they are calling from and on my phone i see the real school number. I am waiting for the call at 2pm for that so called interview.”

“I also applied to this job, went through the entire process, sent my degrees, CV and even received two phone calls supposedly from the school. As soon as I was informed that I had to deposit 2000 euros in some bank account in a foreign country I knew something was up. Their email domain is based somewhere in India and they were asking for a deposit in a Scandinavian Bank. The man that spoke to me had a very heavy German accent and pretended to be talking to the secretary e.g he even said: Tanja can you bring me her file? It seemed very real. Anyway, when I called the actual School they informed me that knew about this problem and that they had not contacted me via phone.
I found the ad on the Indeed Austria website. I hope this helped someone out there!”

“I was a “victim” of a scam by someone posing as St Gilgen International School. I found the job opening on Indeed Austria and they were looking for an ESL teacher. I went through written and phone interviews and they called me using the actual phone number at St Gilgen’s. Once I got an email that I had to deposit 2000 euros in a bank account in either Sweden or FInland (I cant recall) I knew something was wrong. So I had someone look into it and he found the email domain was based in Mumbai India. The email was different than that on the official website. The one used by the scam is info@stgilgenintlschool.com but the original is @sgis.at I hope this has helped and something can be done about it.”
