First Conditional ESL Worksheet

Looking for a simple and practical way to practise the first conditional? This free ESL worksheet helps students review conditional sentence structures while focusing on verb choice and correct form. It’s ideal for elementary or pre-intermediate students.

Students complete a series of first conditional sentences by selecting the correct verb from a list and putting it into the appropriate form. It works well as independent work, pair work, or for quick revision at the end of a grammar lesson.

Activity Overview

  • Level: Elementary / Pre-intermediate
  • Target language: First conditional (if + present, will + base)
  • Time: 10–15 minutes
  • Group size: Individual or pairs

What you need

How to use

  1. Hand out the worksheet to students individually or in pairs.
  2. Explain that each sentence has one or more missing verbs.
  3. Students choose the correct verb from the list and put it into the right form to complete each first conditional sentence.
  4. You can check answers together as a class, or have students compare in pairs first.

Why use this activity?

This worksheet gives learners a chance to reinforce their understanding of the first conditional in a controlled, focused way. It’s useful for consolidating form and meaning after introducing the grammar point, and it encourages careful attention to verb tenses and agreement.
