Courses offered: English as a Foreign Language 1 and 2, English for Academic Study 1 and 2, English for Specific Purposes 1 and 2, General English and Conversation classes

English as a Foreign Language (1)
Classes focus on grammar and error analysis, vocabulary development, pronunciation and socio-cultural English, with an emphasis on communication.

English as a Foreign Language (2)
Classes focus on developing students' competence in English, building on basic skills already acquired. They will enable students to use the English language more accurately and with greater confidence, in ways which demonstrate a capacity to choose appropriate lexical terms in a wide range of general fields.

English for Academic Study (1)
This module concentrates on the core language required for the development of academic reading and writing skills. It provides a solid foundation in the academic language required for EAP 2.

English for Academic Study (2)
Students work intensively on the development of study skills in English, including text analysis, research methods, listening to lectures, note-taking, participation in seminars and IELTS Examinations preparation.

English for Specific Purposes (1)
One special area of study is chosen. Specialisations may include: English for Business, Tourism and Hotel management.

English for Specific Purposes (2)
This unit extends and develops aspects of language covered in ESP 1. It aims to provide a clear understanding of what is expected in terms of critical analysis of ideas as well as providing a subject-specific context for academic essays and seminars.

This module seeks to provide an introduction to the language and discourse of the students' specialist subject areas. Students will become familiar with the texts and vocabulary specifically used and practice will be given in the format of the production of written assignments and presentations in these areas.


General English

Course aims:
English language courses are designed for non-native language students who are studying at Qeshm Education Centre. They aim to help students in three ways:

1. Improve their command of English in connection with their studies

2. Familiarise them with the study skills necessary for study in English speaking countries

3. Familiarise them with the communicative use of English required for social and everyday situations, in order to facilitate living in or visiting an English-speaking environment

Course content:
1. The courses include: General English... The books for this course are based on a carefully constructed syllabus to develop the student's four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. QEC offers everything the student requires. In addition to the course books the students are challenged with a stimulating range of topics, challenging follow up activities using visual aids, videos and supplemental activities. The students are given regular progress tests and are able to monitor their own progress.

2. Practice in spoken English, both for academic life, socialising and other interactions.

The highly qualified and experienced teaching staff of QEC creates the perfect environment to assist students to cope with English and other major languages of the developed world. The levels are:

Basic
Elementary
Pre - Intermediate
Intermediate
Upper Intermediate

Courses run in terms consisting 21 sessions and for 1hour 30 minutes per session. Students are taught in groups of up to fifteen.

Times of classes are arranged at the beginning of each term. We do our best to accommodate the students at the times they request. Students also have access to a range of course books and other materials to aid their language learning in the Centre.


English for Specific Purpose

QEC offers in-house courses to companies and organizations. The courses offered are specifically designed for the current language needs of the Business English for business world, Conversation and ESP. The QEC syllabus is customized to develop the students' four skills with special emphasis on the development of business and ESP interactions. In addition to business English, QEC offers courses in Information Technology and exam preparation. Students are encouraged to participate in international examinations such as (BEC) Business English Certificate, First Certificate of English (FCE), Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), Certificate of Proficiency English (CPE) and International English Language Testing Service (IELTS). The main objective is to successfully pass ESOL, ISE and other EFL examinations. A course designed specifically for children is also available.


Conversation classes

This course is designed for non-native speakers of English at intermediate and pre-advanced levels who wish to further develop their English language skills for general and academic purposes. It approaches language improvement through two broad strands:

Language Development which involves grammar review and vocabulary expansion

Development of oral Skills, highlighting the use of English in discussions, socialising and other interactions.
Overall, this course seeks to consolidate competence in the analysis and communicative use of the language system of English.

Objectives of the course:
To develop grammatical competence, focusing on accuracy in the use of key linguistic structures, through analysis and practice in some of the major areas of grammatical difficulty at higher levels.

To develop awareness and command of the lexical resources of the language, so as to enable greater flexibility and variety of choice of vocabulary in a communicative context, and improve the ability to comprehend and produce idiomatic English

To develop fluency in spoken English in a variety of settings, with a particular focus on participation in discussions and seminars, as well as social communication

Classroom sessions:
The sessions involve a combination of teacher-led input and analysis, combined with practical task-based work.

Methods of assessment:
Students have the option of taking part in the international ESOL exams conducted by Trinity College London.
