An initial teacher training course, though participants may already have some teaching experience. It includes: analysis of English from a foreign learners point of view, development of language skills, resources, lesson planning, teaching, pronunciation and classroom management. Some courses look at teaching English from the ESOL teachers point of view.

Teaching Practice is an integral part of the course. Trainees work in teams of 4 to 6 with a tutor and are expected to collaborate in groups when teaching classes. When not teaching, each member is expected to observe other team members and discuss lessons with the group and tutor afterwards.

Observation: During the course trainees have to observe eight hours of teaching by experienced teachers and write full reports on observed lessons.

Course Structure: includes input sessions on language awareness and methodology, observed teaching practice and observation of experienced teachers.

Assessment: Assignments, teaching practice and observation.

Duration: Various modes, from 4 week intensive tp 20 week evening.

Next Steps: Employment, usually abroad; the Cambridge DELTA Diploma course or Certificate in Further Education Teaching, Stage 3 & Certificate for ESOL Subject Specialists after 2 or more years experience.
