CAMBRIDGE CERTIFICATE IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (CERT TESOL) COURSE

SIX WEEKS FULL-TIME
ATTENDANCE PATTERN

These courses are held over a period of seven weeks with one week being a study week. Course hours are from 9.00am to 5.00pm from Monday to Friday inclusive.

SIX MONTH PART-TIME COURSE
USUAL ATTENDANCE PATTERN

a) Tutor Input
Every Monday 6.00-9.00pm
+ 6 Thursday evenings 6.00-9.00pm

b) Teaching preparation, practice, feedback and some observation.
Wednesday afternoons 1.30-6.00pm
Other observation is arranged to suit trainees.

THREE MONTH PART-TIME COURSE
ATTENDANCE PATTERN
This course will be Monday evenings and some Thursday evenings 6-9 pm and six Saturday mornings of 4.5 hours duration. There will be a half term holiday in October. Teaching practice will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30 – 6 p.m.


COURSE CONTENT

a) The course is essentially practical; all input, written work and teaching practice being focused on the practical needs of the teacher in the classroom.

b) Trainees must complete six hours teaching practice and a minimum of six hours observation of EFL teachers in the classroom. Small groups of trainees are assigned to an experienced TEFL tutor and regular EFL classes. Observation, lesson planning and teaching will take place within the mainstream EFL class programmes giving trainees a more realistic view of EFL teaching.

c) The aim of this initial scheme is to develop:

° practical awareness of the learners (their needs, motivation and difficulties); language (grammar, phonology, functions and meaning); materials (course books, reference and resource books and authentic material).

° practical ability in classroom management and lesson planning, introduction and practice of a new language, development of skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The course is internally assessed and moderated by one or two visits from an external assessor.
