Lyons English is a small independent language school in the beautiful cathedral city of Ely, just 22km north of Cambridge, in the East of England. We offer programmes for adults and younger students which combine creative and cultural activity with English tuition. As a small independent school, we can be very flexible – we are happy to design courses to suit group or individual interests and linguistic abilities.

English Summer Study Holidays for students aged between 12 and 17. These programmes are for one or two weeks and combine regular English tuition with an exciting and varied range of activities and excursions. Excursions and activities include: day trips to London and Cambridge, sight-seeing, shopping and galleries/museums; outdoor activity day which mainly involves water sports (such as raft-building, kayaking and paddle-boarding); swimming; drama workshop with professional theatre practitioners. All travel and entry costs of excursions and activities are included in the course cost. We also offer an optional activity, such as a visit to the Harry Potter studios, or to Chelsea or Arsenal football stadiums in London.

Our prices are very competitive and for groups of 10 or more students, we offer special rates and/or discounts.

We also offer creative and cultural themed courses for adults, families and independent students throughout the year. A typical course would combine a series of English lessons with cultural excursions which can be adapted to the interests and requirements of individual students and groups.

These courses are for adults and are designed on specific themes – the nature of the activities and excursions are appropriate to the theme of the course. Our current programmes include excursions to historic houses and gardens, and visits to galleries and museums. All travel and entry costs of excursions (unless specifically excluded) are included in the course fee, and are accompanied by experienced guides.
See our website for brochure and sample timetable.

All current adult and junior programmes include 10-12 hours of classroom English tuition per week. The content of the English tuition sessions is designed to relate to the activities and excursions in which students have taken or will take part during their stay. We describe our courses as ‘Study Holidays’ as they are intended to combine an opportunity to explore and experience English culture and to practice English skills in practical situations as well as within the more formal classroom environment.

Ely is a small and safe environment, offering plenty to do and see within easy walking distance. Students on our English Summer Study Holiday stay with our wonderful network of host families in Ely and surrounding villages who have contributed greatly to the success of our summer courses. On adult programmes, visitors can choose to stay with a host family or to stay in a local hotel, bed & breakfast, or live more independently in self-catering accommodation.
