When applying for a job, please use the same level of professionalism and respect that you would expect from your future employer. Language schools and other employers invest time and resources into the recruitment process, just as you do when researching jobs, writing your CV and preparing for interviews. With this in mind:
- Please don’t accept an employment offer unless you are sure that you want to take it up. Language schools need to make sure they have the necessary staff in place at a particular time to deliver the classes they have promised to their students. Accepting an offer and then changing your mind several weeks later can leave language schools in a difficult and damaging position.
- If you do need to pull out for legitimate reasons after accepting an offer or at any stage of the recruitment process, let the employer know as soon as possible so that they can move on with their recruitment and find a replacement.
Research the employer carefully before applying for a position and accepting a job offer:
- Search for the name of the person / contact person / contact email online
- If possible, talk to teachers who have worked for the employer

- Check your CV for no grammatical or spelling mistakes – applying for an English teaching job with spelling mistakes on your CV won’t impress many employers!
- Make sure that the layout is clear and easy to read.
- Make your TEFL qualifications and any relevant experience clearly visible and at the top. These are the only two things that most recruiters really want to know – don’t make them read through pages about your summer jobs when you were 16 to find your TEFL qualification on one line near the end.
- Do highlight other relevant skills and experience, but be very selective and keep it concise.
