    Hello,

My name is Mark and I am 38 years old. I’m a musician/teacher by trade but I would like to teach English in China. I do not have a degree but I do have almost 20 years of teaching experience, including thousands of private 1-on-1 students, experience teaching in 3 different American high schools, and many strong letters of recommendation supporting my skill level in teaching. In 2010, I taught English briefly (6 months) in Taiwan at a kindergarten and enjoyed it very much. I am hesitant to mention that to employers in China though as I was teaching there illegally. As I am sure most of you know, there are laws agains foreign teachers teaching in kindergartens but, as you also know, principals are all under extreme pressure to provide this anyway, despite the law… Parents demand it… and allllll the schools do it. So yes, I had to duck out a window a couple times when the government officials came to do surprise inspections but, overall it was a very positive experience for me. Now, I would like to try to find a job teaching in China, preferably in Shanghai as I am also hoping to try to get into the Shanghai music scene as a drummer. I want to get a teaching certification of course but, I really can’t seem to determine which certifications are truly valuable and which ones are just bilking you for bucks. for instance the TEFL certification ranges from about $200 to almost $1000?!?! But, no where can I find information about the real usefulness, or lack thereof, of these different certifications.
    1. Can someone advise me on the specific certifications and their value?
    2. Can someone give me advise on how to best contact employers in China? (should I contact schools directly? or deal with recruiters?)
    3. Should I mention my previous teaching experience in Taiwan?
    4. Given my lack of degree, what kind of pay/job offers should I expect to receive?
    5. If anyone has any suggestions or advice for me about trying to play music in China, I would also welcome those…

Incidentally, not that it matters but, I have been teaching myself Chinese for the last year or so… I’m hoping that will make things easier when I get there.

Any advice or information you can provide me with would be much appreciated.

    Thank you so much everyone!!!!

    Hi,

As this post is China specific and that you also require specific information and answers I would suggest going here (if you haven’t already)

    http://middlekingdomlife.com/guide/

I would strongly suggest that you read their guides before you submit any questions. As always search the forums/stickies and be specific with your queries before you post.

    Good luck!

Super weak…. Come on… I asked very specific questions. Does no one have any actual advice for me here?? Or is this site worthless?

Don’t direct me to another site. Just answer my simple questions.

Well take it as you will. I offered the site as it is reknown as the most comprehensive site on teaching in China.

If you care to read the extensive guides to teaching and non teaching matters in China it will answer most of your questions.

As you will learn with matters Chinese, questions are rarely simple and answers equally so.

Just offering my experience that’s all.

Well Mark I’m not surprised noone has answered you with that kind of attitude. Someone was kind enough to respond to your query and all you could say was "Super weak" and then make a demand… If you tried a bit of gratitude for someone who has given up their free time to answer your question, rather than rudeness and blunt demands, then you might get some other responses as well. The people who contribute to this forum are not your servants.
