I am 61 years old, a graduate and an experienced schoolteacher. I have a Trinity TESOL course booked for August.

I am beginning to think that I may not get a job because of my age. I’d like to teach in Hong Kong, the Middle East, Japan or Europe.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Absolutely not! If you are qualified, you can go anywhere at 60 (even in early 70’s). That said, there is a little bit of age discrimination in the Far East, but countries like Japan are learning slowly but surely that older teachers can be bring so much to the table. So, yes, it is very possible for you teach anywhere you want. Go for it! Go where your heart is set on.

Best of luck to you in your EFL endeavors! :D

Go and do it! Whilst you are there, those who had doubts that overcame them will still be where they were when you upped sticks and went. Your venture may not go exactly as Plan A but you will give it your best shot. Take up thine marker-pen and go. Think of the post-cards you can send home.
(And do post up the good bits for us)

Finding a teaching job at 61 is not impossible although it may be difficult. The Middle East tends to prefer older teachers.

In Europe there’s (theoretically) no age discrimination but the issue of work permits might crop up (are you a UK/Irish citizen allowed to work within the EU?).

Croatia is looking for teachers and there’s one place to try along with Russia where age is less of an issue.

Japan and HK might prove more problematic but with experience and qualifications there’s theoretically no bars to teaching there.

If your heart is set on Japan, please do apply there. There are plenty of jobs there, and being older should not present much of a problem, considering that they are more 50 and 60 year-olds teaching there than you’d ever think (despite the notion that Japan prefers "young" teachers ).

Thailand, I believe, is known for having plenty of teachers over 50.

South Korea may present some problems as I don’t believe that issue visas to folks over 60. But things may have changed, or there may be exceptions. Most countries are not like this, however.

Russia has great respect for older teachers, as does the Middle East.

You should be able to find in Turkey, too. EFL instructors are in great demand there (may be a slight preference to for younger teachers in Istanbul, although I am not sure)

    You are never too old!

It is true though that it may be difficult in certain countries but don’t let that put you off!

In some countries you have to be under a certain age for Visa regulations (always check with the embassy). For example, I believe you need to be under 49 for Japan.

If you are from Europe then you will be eligible to work in Europe.

The short answer is check with embassies and understand the Visa regulations.

Good luck and I hope you find work.

I didn’t know there are age limits for visas in Japan. There are EFL instructors there in their 60’s. I do know that age is much more of a factor in South Korea. That may be the main "big" TESOL country that is possibly closed to the OP, but I say that with no certainty.

Best of luck again! :D You will find work pretty much anywhere your heart is set on.

Ah well, there you go! Maybe you can apply to Japan over 49! Sorry for the confusion. It varies a lot country to country.

    Always check with the embassy.

Go for it, Liz. I’m 53 and still going strong. I’ve bumped into a number of ‘silver-foxes’ in my time abroad, so join the club!
