Hi everyone! Wondering if you could help, needing some advice!
So, some background information, I’m currently doing an MA in App Linguistics and TESOL, and I have a CELTA., however I do not have any experience teaching English. I finish University in August and I’m hoping to go to Spain soon after, for a year, to gain some experience. What I would really love to do, after I return from Spain, is to stay in the UK and do what I love, teaching English.
I was just wondering if there are many opportunites for a full time career in TESOL within the UK? I have seen the pre-sessional tutor jobs, but as far as I’m aware, they aren’t full time throughout the year? And they also require a lot of experience and a DELTA – am I right?
Any help or experience working in the UK would be greatfully appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi Maria
the situation here in the UK is not a happy one as regards TEFL. I’ve been in London for the last 11 years and things have reached a low point it seems, especially if you want to teach adults.
That said, with an MA under your belt you might find work, although making a career out of teaching English in the UK is extremely difficult at the moment unless you’re already in somewhere with a cozy contract. But even then, schools have been going bust so not guaranteed.
Sorry I can’t offer better news, but I would say that with determination and a very positive attitude, you might find a decent year-round position.
All the best. -
