I’ve been recently thinking about applying for a TEFL (probably the CELTA) so I can teach English in Spain. However, the course doesn’t finish until September 19th. I’m just wondering if that would rule me out for most of the jobs in English language schools as the school term would have already started and most teachers would have probably already been hired. Am I right in thinking this? Also the course costs almost €900 so I don’t want do it if I’m not able to find a job after!

It would rule you out of a fairly high percentage of the jobs, but not all. I worked in Barcelona for 2 years a while ago and, if I remember correctly, I had an interview in the first half of September and started work at the beginning of October. So you’d be cutting it fine. There would still be some jobs available, but I’d say there would be no guarantee of finding employment.

I know I’m wading into the discussion a little late but I’d say it’s definitely not too late, I’ve seen schools steadily hire new teachers all the way through to the end of October.

English learners will sign up to courses at various points throughout the year for courses of different lengths, which in turn creates a demand for more English teachers.

And don’t forget that there’s often a couple of English teachers who go home for Christmas and forget to come back; often schools are looking in early January for replacements.
