    Hey Everyone,

My friend and I are ESL teachers in the states and we’d like to teach abroad this summer. We would like to teach adults but it’s been challenging finding positions for this thus far. I’m hoping some of you will have some guidance for finding positions or schools for teaching adults and maybe which countries would be the best for this. Your feedback is appreciated.

Most teaching is to teenagers right around the world. The teachers I’ve met who teach only adults have worked their way into that side of the business after they’ve been in the country for some time.

You could think about countries where the state school system is good for English so there are less private schools and those that exist are primarily for adults. I’m thinking here of Germany mainly.

Language schools and universities are probably your best bet. Language school tend to teach a range of levels, so you will probably not only teach adults. You might teach kids in the morning and adults in the evening. Depending on your qualifications, you might be able to work at a university, but they usually want you to sign a 1-year contract.

The place depends on your interests and motivation for wanting to go abroad. Are you doing it to make money, have a cultural experience, or get teaching experience? Where have you always wanted to travel? What type of experience do you want to have?

For Japan, you can try http://www.ohayosensei.com, and look into Westgate. They hire for university positions short-term. In Thailand, there is http://www.ajarn.com.
