Some moderators are predators and they will eat you for lunch. You will not know you were screwed until your 3rd or 4th payday when you realize your pay is 30%-50% less than all the other foreign teachers at your school.
Yes this post is long-overdue. I visited the TEFL sub of Reddit about two weeks ago and within 1 hour of asking a simple question if it was better to teach in Korea or China, I got 6 personal messages and one was from a guy who was one of the mods named “China Donkey” who recommended 2 different recruiters to me. But when I contacted both of them, they refused to give me any information about themselves, only claiming to be “working in China for many years and have lots of contacts”. They would only give me their first names and disposable free email addresses and no company names nor websites!
Then 3 days later I got a pm from China Donkey again asking me if I was happy with the the job his friends found me, when in reality I think it was he himself who contacted me and the one who refused to give me any info. By using sock puppet accounts it is very easy for them to do this.
What made me really leery is that someone had posted a warning about exactly this sort of guerilla recruiting and the day after I read it, I went back to comment about the mystery referrals I received and the post was gone! Deleted. Who deletes posts – mods.
So then I went over to the TEFL_Blacklist to report all this and after I told the above story, my post was deleted within an hour with a message that I was “doxing a moderator”. How could this be when I was never given any real name for any moderator except his user name “China Donkey”?
