At the end of my current contract I’m going to be looking for work as an Academic Manager or DoS. I don’t mind working as a teacher initially, however with my experience I would like to work in management.

Having worked in the TEFL sector for the last 3 years, I am fully aware that there are a number of schools out there that will rip you off, or accept people with no teaching experience or qualifications.

What I would like to know is the names of reputable language companies in China, Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam.

If anybody can give me some advice on this I would be extremely grateful.

    Many thanks.

    Dear Bethano
I believe that most management/DOS positions require at least a DELTA if not a MA. If you have these, go to tefl.com and search jobs for Academic Manger positions by country. I know that SE Asia has a lot of schools and is almost always in need of Managers. You might be able to find something

    Hope this Helps

    Hi Bethano

I’m not sure if you have a Diploma level qualification, but Wise one is right – you’ll find that many reputable DoS jobs require one. This is because it demonstrates to an employer a sound knowledge of ELT theory and practice, including experience in, for example, course planning, as well as a commitment to TEFL as a career.

Of course, that is not to say that a teacher without a Diploma level qualification cannot have this knowledge and commitment – and there is a lot more to being a DoS than just these things – but you may find that your options are more limited without one.

Having said that, you will find many more schools in Asia who will offer DoS positions without a Diploma than in, for example, Europe.

In terms of which of these schools are reputable, as a first step I would advise doing a Google search for the name of the school and seeing if you can find anything negative written about them anywhere online – bad experiences with schools are very well reported and documented in the various forums, including this one.

    Hope this helps.

    Keith
