Hi there

I am a recently graduated TESL teacher from Canada. I have an upcoming interview to teach in Abu Dhabi, and am wondering if anyone has experience with bringing a spouse there. I know that he can get a visa, but I’ve been told that there can be a lot of discrimination, especially against people who are not originally from Western countries or white…He is qualified teacher in Guatemala, so maybe he will be able to teach there as well (e.g. Spanish…if there is a demand for it). Does anyone have any ideas/tips?

Thanks!!

Hey Claire!
You both should be fine. You’re right, there is a touch of discrimination against those who are not local, or from the west, or white, but the worst of it and always the most prevalent visually is against Indians and Filipinos.
Getting a visa though in the UAE is rarely a problem with anyone and yes, he can always get a teaching job. Spanish is probably more sought after in the language companies than schools so I would first try somewhere like Berlitz or Wall Street Institute to find him a job. There is a GOOD chance Berlitz in Dubai or Sharjah but I’m not too sure about Abu Dhabi.
Good luck though, I LOVED the UAE!
Best!

Do you know Desert Speak It’s a forum dedicated to working in Dubai and UAE. it seems to have a lot of up-to-date info. It might be worth checking it out.
