Hi – I’m looking to study the CELTA course in Vietnam over the summer and return to London to fit private teaching around a Masters degree. Does anyone have experience of private teaching in London – how easy is it to find students, what can I charge and will having the CELTA qualification be at all beneficial?

I taught in London for a couple of years a few years ago. I started off working for a couple of schools, teaching something like 35 contact hours a week just to pay the bills. I was able to gradually build up some private students, so that I could then stop working for one of the schools and teach a little less (you can charge a lot more for private teaching than most schools will give you). But it didn’t happen overnight – it takes time to get contacts, get yourself known and build up enough students to make anything approaching a decent living. The CELTA will definitely be an advantage.
