    Hi Everyone,

I am very new to teaching. I have a student who just wants private lessons once a week until October. She has an oral exam in English and she has to do a presentation on Economics. It seems as if she does not care about really learning English, she just wants to pass this exam. We have quite a lot of time ahead of us so I did not want to jump straight in with presentations. She is Pre-intermediate and I think she need to practise English conversation maybe but I just feel lost as where to start with her. If any one can give me any advise I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

With private lessons just once a week until October you’ll probably find the time will go faster than you think. If she does, for example, 2 hours a week, then you’ll have something like 30 hours with her. So you’ll still need to be precise and selective with your objectives and course plan.

I would start by finding out exactly what she needs to do for her presentation. How long is it? Will she use visual aids? Will she have to answer questions afterwards? etc. Then, try to identify her areas of weakness in terms of these objectives:

    – If she doesn’t have to answer questions, for example, then spend less time on listening comprehension.

    – Is she lacking economics vocabulary?

    – Which grammatical structures and functional language does she need to work on to be able to give her presentation effectively?

    – Which language items will she need to know first, in order to cope with this language she needs for her presentation? (For example, if she will be using past tense passive in her presentation, she will need to have some understanding of the past simple tense first).

Think along those lines and come up with an outline of a plan for what you need to cover over the 3 months. You can adapt this plan as you go along, but it’ll give you a solid framework from which to work.

Hope that helps to get you started.
