    Hi,

I wonder when you say with reported speech, you change all the verbs like in the text book.

    for example.

Tom said ," When I arrived, they were having dinner"
=> Tom said that when he had arrived, they had been having dinner.

Do you say like that? or Are there any alternatives. Can I say
    – Tom said when he arrived , they were having dinner.-?

    Thanks beforehand

There is often a difference between what the textbook tells us is "correct" grammar and what is commonly used.

In this case, I think you would hear "Tom said when he arrived they were having dinner" much more often that the "textbook" version.
