    Hi there!

I’ve got this sentence to be rewritten into the passive:

They thought the PM would make a speech -> The PM…..

    My guess is:
The PM was thought to make a speech, but I´m doubting because the active sentence is in the conditional whereas my transformation misses out that detail….

    Any comments?

    Cheers!

hmm .. ‘the PM’ is not an object of ‘thought’ although it may look like it in the sentence as you wrote it .. rewrite the sentence so:
"They thought that the PM would make a speech"
and you see the PM is actually a subject of the verb ‘would make’ in the ‘that’ clause.

So if you want ‘thought’ in the passive form, you would write:
"It was thought (by them) (that) the PM would make a speech."

If you want the whole sentence in passives (passive of ‘thought’ and passive of ‘would make’):
"It was thought a speech would be made by the PM."

    Hope this helps,

    Bob

I agree to Dltc about his explanation regarding the passive voice of teh aforementioned sentence.
The sentence contains two clauses and it is upto the person whether he transforms only the first part or the two.

    I prefer

They thought that a speech would be made by the PM.

It was thought… by who? them, him, her?

Why to actually say this sentence in the Passive Voice?

I see some kind o fronting by putting the word speech to the front of the latter clause.

They thought the PM would make a speech
passive may be as A speech would be made by the PM was thought by them.Is it ok.

I wonder if a comma, as well as an empty subject, has been missed in your sentence.

A speech would be made by the PM, it was thought by them.

    Actually, wrong way round

"It was thought (that) a speech would be made by the PM"

has to be the most literal passive translation

    Hi there !
I think the right answer is :\
They thought ……… would be made ….
    WHY???
THE INTRODUCTORY VERB ( THOUGHT ) IS STATIC AND CAN NEVER BE PASSIVISED
    e.g
She would like married doctors to examine her daughter .( MAKE PASSIVE )
She would like her daughter to be examined by married doctors .
