    Hi everybody

I’m totally new in the world of TEFL and I would like some advices about a TESOL course.

I’ve found a course in Chiang Mai wich is very cheap: paradiseTEFL.

It looks absolutely perfect: 4 students class and it doesn’t includes only basic TEFL – TESOL courses, but also advanced courses for IELTS and TOEFL.

But it’s a bit suspicious because I have to send money to a personnal account (mr and mrs XXXXXX). When I send an email, I get an answer within 15minutes all the time. even on sundays or in the middle of the night.

Because I’m not a native English speaker, I asked if I can receive some of the courses before the starting date. His answer was"no problem, I will correct them for you before you arrive".

It looks too perfect to be true.
maybe somebody knows this school? I don’t want to give US$800 for nothing.

And does TESOL always means the same certificate?

    Thank you very much :)

You said it right. It sounds and looks very dubious.

Most of all their "accreditation". If you look up ITEFLAA or ITESOLAA on the Net you get nothing but one static page with no concrete details whatsoever. They claim they are (quote) "a registered entity with members selected from leading academic instutions [spelt wrong] from around the world" and yet they mention none. Sounds very strange to me. The pages look as if they were quickly put together to serve just one purpose… and it isn’t independent accreditation. :(

I’d steer clear of this one.

Check instead TEFL Course Review. This is a site where TESL/TEFL courses (both onsite and online) are independently reviewed and rated by people who actually took the courses. It might help you decide on which course to choose.

    Hope it helps

thank you Pete for you advice. :)

This course is the cheapest, but the quality might be the poorest.
Maybe I should look forward for another course.
If somebody has any information about this provider, please let me know.

Yes I took the Paradise TEFL course in 2009 and I was very impressed not only with the truthful and realistic approach, but the fair price as well. I received several advanced certificates in addition to the basic TEFL cert for the same price. They run a small hands on program which focuses on actual hands on teaching for the majority of the class. They use local students who work in the area and need to learn English for their jobs for the practice teaching. This is not a corporate business model approach but rather one for people who really want the key skills necessary to become good teachers, not a bunch of useless information and busywork.

The advice I got from the instructor Dr. Stephen was spot on and the class prepared me much better than a later CELTA class I was required to take by an international school administrator afterwards. The personal help and instruction I got set me up for several good job opportunities. Do you homework for sure, but I recommend you don’t just judge a programs’ effectiveness by its price cover. I am currently teaching in Thailand at CMRU and would not have gotten the job without my certification and hands on experience.

I know nothing of this course or organization. Your best bet if you want to take it is to ask to get into contact with a dozen or so graduates and check their validity.

Superjul, Did you end up taking the course with Paradise TEFL? If so, how was it? If no, why not?

I’m checking out courses to become certified in my city and Paradise TEFL is one of them.
