    Hi guys

I’m an Australian headed to Europe late August to find my first teaching role. Currently looking at either Prague or (somewhere in) Germany.

I have an online TEFL Certificate (from ITTO) from 2014, and am fully aware this has no comparison to an in-person course.

Should I attempt finding a job with only the online certificate (no experience)? Or look to complete a new course in Prague/Germany…?

Wondering if anyone had suggestions on what to do, or what may improve my chances as an online accredited teacher.

    Thanks!!

    Dave

    Hi Dave

You’ll probably find that once you’re on the ground in Prague or Germany you have a better chance of finding a job than you will do searching online. I would email some language schools in your chosen city on spec first, with your CV, and then once you’re there, actually visit the schools yourself (again armed with your CV) and enquire about jobs.

As to your chances of success with an online qualification – well, in both Prague and Germany they will be significantly less than if you had a classroom based qualification, especially without experience, and this is why actually going to the schools may help – a school may just have a vacancy and with you standing there in front of them you could solve their problem then and there! But there’s a bit of luck involved with this… Be prepared for a lot of polite “no thank yous”. If you find you’re getting nowhere, then you may have to accept than the online qualification isn’t enough and look to do a classroom based course. Doing one in Prague (or Germany) gives you the big advantage of the training centre’s contacts and local job guidance help.

It all depends on whether you want to take the chance and try to get a job with your qualifications as they are – and this depends on how long you can afford to stay in Prague (or wherever) without work, how quickly you can get on a course if you decide that this is necessary, etc.

    Hope that helps?

    Hi Dan

Thanks so much for the advice. Very practical, as it probably wouldn’t hurt (except perhaps the bank account a little) to give it a shot in person with my current certification.

I guess I know what to expect now too. I’ll get onto a few schools in the coming weeks, and apply the ‘squeaky wheel’ principle :)

    Thanks again

    Dave
