    Hello,

I was going to do an in-person CELTA at my local centre, however they now only offer an online version. Will I miss out on a lot if I take part in the online one? Is it still worth doing considering I won’t be able to practice teaching in person? There is no discount despite it being online.

    Thanks,

    Antony

    Hi Antony

It’s true that you will miss out on some of the benefits of an in-person course, not least the sense of camaraderie with other trainees, and of course in-person teaching practice.

But your CV will still say “CELTA”, and this counts for a lot.

For the teaching practice – are they not offering this element of it online too?

With the current situation, unfortunately a lot of in-person options are just not available, so it’s a question of whether you want to compromise here but still have “CELTA” on your CV (which is a good thing as I mentioned above), or look at travelling further afield (possibly abroad) for an in-person course. Some are still running…

    Hope that helps.

    Hello Keith,

    Thank you for your reply.

It is the lack of in-person teaching practice that was my main concern. There is online-teaching practice in the online CELTA I presume.

This leads me to ask how much will online-teaching practice prepare me for in-person teaching?

I have used the ‘studycelta.com’ website to try and find in-person courses. Do you know if this website features every celta centre in the world?

    Thanks

    Antony

It will prepare you to an extent, because a lot of the techniques and skills you use apply to both online and in-person teaching. But there is a lot that is different too of course – classroom management (how you organise your students, set up activities, etc), the types of activity that you can do, for example. But you may well find, paradoxically, that once you’ve done some online teaching, standing up in front of a class is actually easier. Being there in the same room as your students, interacting with them naturally, might feel easier and more comfortable than seeing them on a screen. This is not the case for everyone, but it may help.

I’m not sure what their website model is – whether they list all the CELTA centres or only those who pay to advertise. If you go directly to the Cambridge English website (https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/find-a-centre/find-a-teaching-centre/) you’ll find the complete list.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you for that information Keith. It’s a big help.

I have looked through a large portion of the list and found one course in Egypt, one in South Korea, one in Japan, and possibly some in Brazil that are still running in-person. Do you know of any others off the top of your head?

    Thanks,
    Antony
