Hello!

I currently work as an Archaeologist in the U.S. and have always wanted to teach English overseas. In particular, I am interested in Morocco.

I currently hold a B.A., and am looking to attend a 4 week residence course in Alexandria, Egypt through TEFL Corp.

I am looking for any advice, wisdom that people with experience in country can pass along to a novice.

I am also in need of feedback on whether a TEFL Certification through TEFL Corp. will be sufficient to find work.

Any other Morocco-specific info would be much appreciated.

I plan to sign up for a TEFC Cert course within the next 2 months and intend to begin attendance by January, 2008.

Also any info regarding Peace Corps activities regarding youth groups would be of interest, as I may want to volunteer, if feasible.

    Thank you!

    Joel

Morocco’s a great place to work. I worked in Casablanca for two years not so long ago.  There are quite a few schools, especially in Casablanca and Rabat, and I think there’s some in Marrakesh and Tangier. There’s a not a great deal to do in Casablanca in terms of touristy things, but you’ll probably have the most luck finding work there. Rabat is smaller, quieter, cleaner and altogether more relaxed. If I returned to Morocco, I’d probably try to find work there. Marrakesh, well, fantastic to visit, but for short periods of time in my opinion. It’s very touristy of course, and is a great place to base yourself for trips to the desert, Essauoira and so on. But you can easily reach it for weekends from Rabat or Casa, and I’d recommend this rather than working there. Tangier, I don’t know much about. Wherever you are, it’s very easy and very rewarding to immerse yourself culturally. Moroccan people are among the friendliest I’ve ever met, on the whole, and went out of their way to be kind and helpful.

PM me if you have specific questions, I’ll do my best to answer them.
Hi, I am looking forward to teach in Morocco but I dont even know where to begin. Which school did you work with? What can I do?
Start by searching the net for school addresses in the area where you’d like to work and contact the schools on spec to find out if they have positions available and what their requirements are.

Also check regularly the job sections on this site and on Free-esl.com, ESL Employment etc and keep an eye on what’s being offered.

Check with your Embassy in Morocco or the Moroccan Embassy in your country to see which papers you need in order to teach legally in Morocco.

Finally, make sure you know what you are doing when it comes to teaching. You don’t say what qualifications you have, whether or not you already teach. Have you had any training in TESL/TEFL? You might need to take a refresher course if you do, and if you don’t you should definitely consider a course that will adequately prepare you for the job.

    Hope this helps

    Hello

If you are interested in teaching English in Morocco, or indeed in participating in a volunteer project in Morocco, a good organisation to go with is the Moroccan Children’s Trust.

There website is at http://www.moroccanchildrenstrust.org and is well worth checking out.
