Hi everyone,

I’m thinking of working for Akcent, IH in Prague. Their starting salary is 10,400 czech crowns for new teachers – 9,000 after tax. This is pretty low, although accomodation and travel are included.

Do you think I could live on this out there? I don’t have a lavish lifestyle, but would like to be able to have some nights out, not starve and explore a bit at the weekends!

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks :)

I don’t have direct experience of Prague, but if this guide is correct, that salary would seem about right if accommodation is included.

You can live on it. But honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it. I am about to finish my contract here and I am counting down the days til I can leave. The salary is survivable, but not very. You won’t starve, but forget about going shopping – ever – or doing much in the way of travel or socializing. The situation for English teachers in Prague is not great. A lot of in-company classes and a LOT of travelling around Prague; not a lot of respect for teachers. I’m not saying don’t come here, but really think about it and whether you are willing to do a pretty stressful job for a year on a very low wage.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks for your response yellow submarine. I’m still thinking of coming over – they have offered me the job and I’m very keen to live over there.

Do you find the work pretty stressful then? How are the split shifts, do they organise them ok?

How is the accommodation too? Is the sharing ok? And the area?

I think I’ll be ok on the money – I’ve saved enough to give myself an extra small allowance a month, which should help. But I guess the trekking around the city in the snow to start teaching at 7am and sharing with only one other person who I don’t know (not been great in london!), is what I’m a bit hesitant about!

I appreciate any advice you can give!

Thanks :)
