    Hi,

I have been a reader of this forum for some time. I’d like the opinions of those who have been teaching for some time please. I finished my CELTA course at the end of Aug. this year. Despite speculative letters firing off letters to schools in countries I’d like to teach in (Poland, Italy and Libya) along with applying for posts advertised both on eslbase and tefl.com in both these target countries and others I’d consider (Russia, Indonesia and Spain) have had very little joy!? Am I missing something? Obvioously I am aware that hiring season is mainly June/July/August but all the ads I have responded to have been new postings on these sites…

Anyway yours views and advice will be grealy appreciated.

    Cheers
    Baltic

Hi Baltic and welcome to the forum.

A common reason for receiving no response from an employer is if the applicant does not meet the requirements in terms of qualifications and experience. If you’ve been applying for posts which state minimum one year experience, for example, many employers will automatically disregard your CV as a newly-qualified teacher.

I would target posts which do not state any requirement in terms of experience. You mentioned Indonesia – this can be a good place to start and gain that vital experience.

Sending speculative letters is a good strategy, but the response rate will inevitably be lower than from schools actively advertising positions, so it requires more time and patience.

Hope that helps – let me know if you’re already only targeting schools which state no experience required, and we’ll think again.

Hi Dan and thanks for your reply.

No I hadn’t only been targeting no exp. req. posts but certainly had only applied for posts which stated exp. preferred, or 12 months exp. as towards the end of my course it was suggested that there may be a lack of applicants and so they may consider applicants with less than a years exp.

It has been very frustrating at times, especially when even a thanks but thanks is often lacking. I understand that its a numbers game and instead of applying for just applying for jobs I am now writing speculative emails. Living in a large city I have through the universities managed to pick up several private students for one to one lessons but its not quite the same as nailing that first contract!

    Any ideas gratefully rec’d,

    Cheers
