So I never planned to be an ESL teacher but when i went to visit my brother in China and met the most wonderful man in the world, now my husband, I discovered a new passion out of necessity.
I began teaching English with no credentials other than my BA in English and American nationality.
I taught adults and some kids for two years at a wonderful company in Nanjing.
Now my husband and I have decided to move to the states for a few years and I want to keep teaching here. But surprise surprise I need credentials in America.

My question is this. I know many people say an online certificate is worth nothing, but what if i already have two years professional experience? I just need the paperwork for america, do i really need to sit through a classroom course and pay all that money or would an online cerificate suffice with the combination of my years teaching?

Before answering your question I’ll declare my interests here and say that I work for ICAL who provide online teacher training!

Ok, make sure of the credentials you need in the States. Some private language schools will demand such-and-such credentials, others will ask for completely different credentials. Likewise, different states require different credentials so ask around so you don’t end up getting something you don’t need.

Second, again different employers are after different things. Some will look at your experience and rate that highly; others will only be looking for credentials.

Having said that, a course – be it online or in-house – will certainly not do you any harm. If you take a good course you will learn and your teaching will improve. We, for example, have many students with experience and they often remark at how much difference the course they took with us made to their teaching.

    Hi :-)

With 2 years teaching experience you will be fine in taking a reputable Online course, and there are many options out there.

    All the best!

ICAL’s advice seems good. If you are wanting it for the States, check what the local authority where you will want to work is looking for. It’s unlikely that any online course will satisfy their requirements.
Choose a course which has university accreditation.
