    Hi

I am a British national and a qualified teacher, having taught modern languages in schools in the UK.

I am interested in teaching English abroad, and have looked at some of the TEFL courses. Most of them seem to be for people who have little or no teaching experience.

Do I need to take one of these courses.

    I would appreciate any input.

    Many thanks

If you’re a qualified and experienced modern languages teacher, you probably have a sound theoretical and practical knowlege of pedagogy and teaching which is transferable to TEFL.

From this point of view, therefore, you may feel that a TEFL course is an unnecessary further qualification (depending, of course, on how long ago you qualified, how up to date you’ve kept yourself with latest trends and issues, etc etc).

Having siad that, I feel that every teacher can always learn more, so you may find that it gives you some fresh ideas, fresh motivation…

From the other point of view, that of finding a TEFL job, it may be a little different. A lot of schools have quite strict requirements about the qualifications they expect from their teachers, and so whereas perhaps your qualification and experience should serve as a valid alternative to something like the CELTA, you may well find that a lot of schools will not recognise it. It depends a lot on where you’re thinking of teaching. In some places it won’t make a difference, in others it will mean that your choice of employment is more limited.
