    Hi everyone!

I made a huuuge mistake with my university, graduated in something I really don’t want to do, though at least I have a diploma. It doesn’t do much, but it might help me save up money for CELTA :)

I have questions because I don’t want to make a big change in my life and then be left hanging (though I understand there are no guarantees).

At the moment I’m considering CELTA because it seems to suit me more but TESOL does seem to open a bit more doors, so we’ll see. I live near Frankfurt right now, but I’d love to do it in Prague if possible.

I’m not a native speaker but I already have a C2 from Cambridge. I have also never ever taught anything before and I never really tried but the little I noticed, I’m not a natural at transferring knowledge.

That’s a long intro to help people understand some questions I have.

    1) Are there books that you can recommend me that will help me with the whole transferring knowledge thing and at the same time be helpful with the course/exams?

    2) I know it would be easier if I had any experience but other than #1 and grammar, are the courses enough to really prepare me or is there more I can do before they even start? (I saw someone recommend getting a bit teaching experience but that’s not an option right now.)

    3) How long before I want to take the course should I apply? In Frankfurt and Prague specifically I suppose.

    4) Once I have the certificate, how long could it take me to find a job? (Not in a fortune telling way but just in your experience :) ) Again, ideally Prague or EU, but I do love to travel.

Sorry if these questions are already answered somewhere, I did look around some but didn’t find them. And thank you to anyone who answers :)

Try “Learning Teaching” by Jim Scrivener – it’s a great introduction and companion to a lot that you’ll learn on the TEFL course.

    2) I know it would be easier if I had any experience but other than #1 and grammar, are the courses enough to really prepare me or is there more I can do before they even start? (I saw someone recommend getting a bit teaching experience but that’s not an option right now.)

I wouldn’t worry too much – the CELTA and Trinity Cert TESOL are designed for people with no experience, even though they are very intensive and a steep learning curve. Bear in mind also that they are 120 hour (ish) courses – you can’t learn everything about anything in that time – so that steep learning curve continues in your first job.

    3) How long before I want to take the course should I apply? In Frankfurt and Prague specifically I suppose.

That varies from course to course – a lot of centres have courses that they still need to fill at the last minute so you can apply not long before the date. Others tend to fill up well in advance.

    4) Once I have the certificate, how long could it take me to find a job? (Not in a fortune telling way but just in your experience :) ) Again, ideally Prague or EU, but I do love to travel.

The more broad your search, geographically speaking, the shorter the time will be. Possibly no more than a few weeks.

    Hope that helps.

    Dan
