The Institute for Applied Language Studies (IALS) at the University of Edinburgh is one of the largest university centres for language teaching in the UK. Opened in 1979 it has developed a comprehensive programme of general, specialist and academic English courses for overseas students, all of which are accredited by the British Council. Each year over 2000 students from more than 25 different countries study at the Institute.

In addition to this IALS runs a wide range of short development courses for English language teachers and is heavily engaged in research in the field of language learning and teaching.
