To revise directions and help practise a writing exercise which often occurs in elementary exams I give each person in the group a slip of paper with a number of a room in the college (ours is quite a large building but you could adapt this to a local area or street map). Each individual must leave the room and find where the room is. Their next step is to retrace their steps and write the directions of how to get to the room, using colours and landmarks to embellish their description. They must NOT write what the final destination is (i.e. the room no. or wherever you choose to send them. They then exchange their directions and each must follow the directions and write down the destination they found - they then check with the writer to see if they were in the right place and if the directions were accurate enough.
Peer correction can also be used in this exercise as each student will have different strengths.
The best thing about this exercise is that the students can't copy so you get an accurate picture of what each individual can do or needs to revise. Even better, you can have a rest while the students get on with it!
