Hop - a - long the kangeroo

Posted by Jacqueline Richards

Language point: activity on animals that jump

Hop - a - long the kangeroo was bouncing along, singing his regular kangeroo song. He wanted to jump up and down, the only way of getting around. He skipped and he hopped all the way to the shops (his pennies jangling and going flip flop) ... then he put in his pouch all the things he could drop. His belly was full of cans and jam, crisps and rolls made of ham - all of the things that a kangeroo could 'BAM !'. He jumped over a fence and through a hole in the hedge ... before doing a loop - de - loop and returning then hence. He pranced and he danced, in a tip - toe hopalong prance - rustling up leaves and flattening the grass in a merry old dance. Hop - a - long kangeroo left kangeroo footprints in the snow as he trod on a sod. Bouncing like a balloon, Hop - a - long the kangeroo bounded over toadstools and mushrooms at the side of the bridleway. WOW ! This was really the best way to hop - a - long travel. His ears waved and his whiskers twitched ... in the strong wind that made his leap higher. So high, in fact, that the Hop - a - long kangeroo completed in the high jump with the frogs - of course, the kangeroo, who had been practising for years, had the highest jump of all the woodland creatures.

Activity
Name five animals that jump.

Physical activity - Can you imitate them ? Race and see who wins.

Group work - Make a giant kangeroo pouch of the wall of your classroom. Put in things that Hop - a - long the kangeroo might find useful on his round the globe trip. This may be a good geography lesson - if students bring in things from their holidays in different countries that Hop - a - long the kangeroo may have picked up en route.

You could use string to link the items to different countries.
