Grandpa's Notebook

Posted by Jacqueline Richards

Language point: writing activity

Grandpa's notebook was full of all kinds of useless information. It was a record of when the snow fell, things to get from the supermarket and how to get to the bank. If it was useless - Grandpa had recorded it ...he wrote the birthdays of all his grandchildren and his wife's anniversairy. January was quite a blank month - as diaries went - only reminders to take down the Christmas tree and take the dog to the vets. Grandpa flipped the page to February and found all kinds of forget me nots - not least a romantic reminder of when to pick up a bouquet of flowers for Valentine's on the 14th. Grandpa's birthday was in March so there was a big cross on the 7th. Not forgetting April Fool's Day - with a message to buy biscuits at the school's spring fayre and collect lots (and lots) of Easter eggs. Before long, it was May Day - and there were lots of messages then too. Midsummer's day in June was marked and various jottings (including a bus ticket or two) to remind Grandpa to ring the dentist and pick up a prescription. Then a big blot for two weeks during the August holidays. Soon it was autumn - and Halloween in October fast approached. Grandpa's notebook had a message from the park rangers for Bonfire Night in November and various receipts for Christmas presents all through December.
