Language exchange

How to have a safe language exchange

The language exchange is a great place to learn a new language and make new friends from all over the world. However, when you use a website where members can communicate with each other, it is always worth remembering that some people who use the internet may not be who they say they are.

So we've put together this quick guide so you can make sure your language exchange is as enjoyable as it should be!

This advice is really aimed at younger members, but it may be just as applicable to adult members.

1   Don't give other members your personal information

You should never give other members your address, telephone number or language exchange password. Think about your friends and family too. You should make sure you don't give out any of this information about them.

2   Don't arrange to meet a member

We advise you not to arrange to meet a member, even if you've been exchanging languages for a long time and you think you know them well. The more insistent somebody is about meeting you the more careful you should be. If you do arrange to meet, always take a trusted adult with you.

3   Tell a trusted adult if you are under 16

If you are under 16, you should always tell a trusted adult that you are using the language exchange. If you are under 13, you must have the permission of a parent or legal guardian before joining the language exchange.

4   Tell us if you are uncomfortable

If a member sends you a message which makes you uncomfortable, you should stop communicating with that member. You should tell us about the behaviour of the member by emailing us at . If you are under 16, you should also tell an adult you trust.
