Berlitz is the world leader in language instruction and acquisition. We are currently taking applications for full-time English Instructor positions within our five language centers in downtown Seoul, South Korea. We accept applications from qualified candidates located within Korea or abroad.
Our History
Berlitz is the world’s oldest and largest organization devoted to language teaching and related services. Since our founding in Rhode Island, USA in 1878, our name has become synonymous with languages, and for good reason. The Berlitz Method has been refined and enhanced by over a century of research and learning technologies. We teach languages in response to a full spectrum of student needs and to a full complement of student types.
Berlitz in Korea
Berlitz Korea opened in January of 1996. We have grown steadily since then and we currently employ approximately 75 Instructors of various nationalities at our Samseong, City Hall, Yeouido, Kangnam and Kwanghwamun Language Centers. The English Instructors are from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the US. It is a nice group to work with and there is a very pleasant working atmosphere.
The Benefits
Our comprehensive benefits package ensures that our Instructors are well compensated for services that they provide. These benefits include:
• A competitive salary. The average monthly wage is 2.5 million won.
• Round-trip airfare reimbursement.
• Flexible Housing. New Instructors are provided with studio apartments in a serviced residence for up the first 3 months of their contracts. Instructors can choose their own accommodations for which they will receive a stipend of 300,000 won per month and an interest free loan of up to 5 million won for the key money (security) deposit.
• A severance payment of one month’s salary for each year of employment upon successful completion of employment.
• Medical benefits. Instructors receive Korean National Medical Insurance for comprehensive coverage, with premiums split between the company and employee.
• Vacation pay. Instructors receive up to a total of 22 paid and unpaid vacation days. First year instructors receive 8 of the 22 days as paid vacation days. Vacation days can be taken at any time during the year. Instructors also have Korean national holidays off in addition.
• Working-visa sponsorship.
• Comprehensive Berlitz Instructor training and ongoing skills development support.
Requirements
To be eligible for working-visa sponsorship, applicants are required to hold a passport from one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK or the US. A 3-year or 4-year degree from a university in one of these countries is necessary. Applicants should also have an out-going and enthusiastic personality.
Development
At Berlitz we want to assist our Instructors in developing their teaching techniques. Teaching experience is not a necessity in becoming a Berlitz Instructor as we conduct a number of different training sessions in the Berlitz Method. In the initial 6-day training we begin by helping people develop the fundamental skills that Instructors need to teach their classes. We also go over other teaching tips such as corrections, pronunciation exercises and the psychology of our students. With this training, we give people coming to us a better understanding of our company and the students they will be teaching. Instructors are paid the teaching rate for all training that is done after the initial training.
Regular follow-up sessions are held to provide Instructors with feedback on teaching performance and to help Instructors develop their teaching skills.
Opportunities
Berlitz has a tradition of promoting from within. In helping our people develop, we hope that they will become interested in taking on more responsibilities. In this way they can grow within our company. There are a number of opportunities for our Instructors to show their leadership abilities with the aim of taking on supervisory positions.
After Instructors have finished their time with Berlitz Korea there are other opportunities available. Instructors are eligible to teach at any of our more than 450 language centers, located in 50 countries around the world.
If you are interested in applying for a teaching position, send your resume and cover letter to jennifer.greene@berlitz.co.kr.
