Hello,
My names Cody and Im looking to possibly teach English in Vietnam. I only have an associates degree in instrumentation and currently work for a gas measurement service company. I understand is absolutely no help all with the job but what I'm wondering is should i go back to school for 3 years and get my bachelors in English and worl on getting the tefl cert. Or use my current degree and credits to get a bachelors in business or communications (batelors of applied science) and get the tefl as well. ( this would be 2 years and I think would cover the work permit issue? )

just for the record I'm 23, white, born and raised in Texas and English is my primary language.

On a sidenote my wife is Vietnamese and is originally from Ho Chi Minh city, We're planning on moving back over
there in anywhere from 2-4 years so that's why I'm trying to figure out what can do for work .

There are more details but this is the jist of everything.
If anyone could reply or send me somewhere that could find some of these answers I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Cody

Hi Cody,

First off an Associates (as you probably know) isn't enough for a teaching visa in Vietnam as they normally require a full degree for the work permit.

However, Vietnam is relatively lax on these things and there are quite a few teachers there who don't have a degree and teaching on a tourist visa.

If you move to Vietnam with your wife (I'm not sure of the visa situation but you might get in as her spouse) then there may well be no issues about getting a job since you are there in person and a native English speaker.

I would still recommend the TEFL Certificate, however, to prove to employers that you know what you are doing in class.
