MA in TESOL and Certificate in TESOL

The Certificate consists of 15 credit hours, and would prepare you to
teach in adult education in the United States or to teach abroad. It can
be completed in two semesters or one (very intensive) summer. An
application form can be found at http://www.american.edu/tesol/certific.html
The MA in TESOL is a 36 credit hour program that would prepare you to
teach in adult education or higher education settings in the United
States or abroad. It can be completed within two years. To obtain an
application, go to the College of Arts and Sciences web site at
http://www.american.edu/cas/admissions/index.html. From there, you will
be able to either download a paper application or apply on-line.
Applying on-line is encouraged and is $30 less than applying on paper.
In addition to the regular university requirements for admissions, you
will also need to submit a satisfactory score on the Graduate Record
Examination.
The MAT:ESOL is a joint program with the School of Education that would
prepare you to teach in K-12 settings in the United States. It consists
of 39 credit hours. To apply, go to
http://www.american.edu/cas/admissions/index.html to download an
application or apply on-line. In addition to the regular university
requirements for admissions, you would also need to submit a
satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination.
Our classes usually meet in the evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. They are
held once a week during the fall and spring semesters; classes held in
the summer meet twice a week. You may take classes as a part-time or
full-time student.
We have a rolling application policy and students may start the program
during any semester (Fall, Spring, Summer).

TESL-541 Teaching Grammar OR TESL-543 Teaching Pronunciation
TESL-620 English Language Teaching III
TESL-527 Cultural Issues in the ESL/EFL Classroom
ANTH-537 Topics in language and culture
ANTH-544 Topics in public anthropology: Anthropology of Education
AND at least three elective courses from TESOL offerings
