CAMBRIDGE CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING TO ADULTS
Introduction
The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is an internationally recognised qualification which provides pre-service training in English language teaching to adults. It is intended for people without previous teaching experience who wish to enter the profession and for those teachers who already have TESOL experience but do not hold a qualification in TESOL.
The CELTA is designed, delivered and evaluated by ICTE-UQ and awarded by Cambridge ESOL, part of the University of Cambridge (UK).
The CELTA is offered full-time over four weeks at ICTE-UQ, although part-time courses may also be available. The course consists of a minimum of 120 contact hours including lectures and workshops, teaching practice (6 assessed hours), supervised lesson planning and feedback on teaching, observation of experienced teachers and of peers, and tutorial support and consultation with tutors. In addition, a minimum of 80 learning hours for reading, research, assignment writing and lesson preparation will be required.
The aim of the course is to develop practical awareness of:
learners’ cultural and individual needs
learner motivation
linguistic form, function and meaning
materials: authentic (real-life), original (teacher’s own creation) and commercially produced
course books and reference books
and practical ability in:
lesson planning, delivery and reflection, classroom management and use of resources
presentation and practice of new language items
developing students’ skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing
assessment and evaluation of student learning in a series of lessons
Attendance
Please note that the CELTA course is very intensive and requires a total commitment on the part of the candidates. Because of its demanding nature, candidates are strongly advised not to have any other concurrent work or study commitments.

Candidates compile a portfolio of written work including lesson plans, teaching materials and assignments.
Cambridge ESOL awards the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages to candidates who satisfactorily fulfill all CELTA assessment criteria and complete all course requirements. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course, observes teaching practice and reads candidates’ portfolios to ensure worldwide consistency of standards and grading.
Training Staff
ICTE-UQ employs a number of teacher trainers who are highly qualified professionals with experience in a wide range of teaching contexts in Australia and abroad. Trainers have postgraduate qualifications in TESOL in areas such as Applied Linguistics and Adult Education or the Cambridge DELTA (Diploma of English Language Teaching to Adults).
Job Opportunities
There continues to be a strong demand for English language teachers in Australia and around the world with many exciting job opportunities. The CELTA course incorporates a practical session with tips and strategies on looking for work. In addition, candidates have access to our ‘jobs noticeboard’ with details of positions in many different countries, websites and letters from previous participants now working in the field and regular email broadcasts. ICTE-UQ also has some of its own CELTA graduates working at the Institute.
Employment Requirements
In Australia, teachers in a NEAS accredited language school are required to have a degree plus a TESOL qualification, e.g. CELTA, plus 800 hours of teaching experience, although schools are permitted to employ some teachers without 800 hours of experience. For further information on qualifications required for teachers in accredited language colleges in Australia, check www.neasaustralia.com
Overseas, English teachers are usually required to have a degree plus a TESOL qualification, e.g. CELTA. However, some schools may employ teachers with a CELTA or equivalent only.
