Course Description
The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a nationally accredited course. It is suitable for advanced level International students who wish to teach English as a second or foreign language. There is an increasing demand for English teachers in various parts of the world and language centres and schools are keen to employ those with training in this specialist area.
Length and delivery
The TESOL Certificate IV is a 220 hour course, delivered over 10 weeks. It consists of 120 attendance hours and 100 project hours. The project hours include assignments, guided reading and guided lesson preparation with mentors.
(Note: the on-line course is not available to students on a student visa. Other International students, such as students on Business Visas, should check with Marketing and International to find out if they are eligible to enrol in the on-line TESOL course)

Currently scheduled for terms 1 and 4, 2007.
Curriculum
Language teaching/learning methodologies
A minimum of 6 hours of supervised and assessed practice teaching of ESL (English as a Second Language) learners at a variety of levels:
Basic grammar
Lesson planning
Use and adaptation of commercial texts
Use of authentic materials
Preparation of teaching materials
Development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
Pronunciation
Cross cultural factors in the classroom
Error analysis and correction techniques
Syllabus design, evaluation and testing
Assessment of language proficiency.
Practical Classes
There is a strong emphasis on the practical content of the course. This includes observation of ESL classes and supervised practice teaching with ESL learners at various levels of language acquisition. Practice teaching begins early, continues throughout the course and is an important part of the end-of-course assessment.
Entry requirements
An official IELTS score of at least 7.0 or equivalent is essential.
Clear and realistic goals to work in this field
Year 12 or equivalent.
Successful Completion
Attend and participate in all course sessions, successfully complete all assignments
Research and assessment tasks
Deliver all the required teaching practicum and the final assessment lesson
Successfully design assessment lesson plans
Present yourself professionally during practice teaching sessions.
