Applicants must have: a high standard of competence in both written and spoken English that enables them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels the potential to develop the necessary skills to become an effective teacher Desirable Applicants should: be at least 20 years old (18 & 19 year olds may be accepted at the Institute’s discretion) have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education, although applicants with no formal qualifications will also be considered All candidates are selected on the basis of an interview and application tasks designed to assess language awareness, literacy skills and aptitude. |

| Means of assessment | Assessment is continuous throughout the course and integrated into all course components. It is based primarily on lesson planning and classroom teaching, with self and trainer evaluations, and a series of four classroom-based, written assignments.
Candidates compile a portfolio of written work including lesson plans, teaching materials and assignments. Cambridge ESOL awards the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages to candidates who satisfactorily fulfil all CELTA assessment criteria and complete all course requirements. An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course, observes teaching practice and reads candidates’ portfolios to ensure worldwide consistency of standards and grading. |
The CELTA is designed to develop practical teaching skills including:
lesson planning, delivery and reflection, classroom management and use of resources
presentation and practice of new language items
developing students’ skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
assessment and evaluation of student learning in a series of lessons
as well as practical awareness of:
learners’ cultural and individual needs
learner motivation
linguistic form, function and meaning
materials: authentic (real-life), original (teacher’s own creation) and commercially produced course books and reference books
The course consists of a minimum of 120 contact hours including lectures and workshops, teaching practice (6 assessed hours), supervised lesson planning and feedback on teaching, observation of experienced teachers and of peers, and tutorial support and consultation with tutors.
