Would you teach in Iraq?

This job vacancy has caused quite a reaction in some blogs. The Univeristy of Kurdistan Hawler is recruiting teachers for positions in the secure northern region of Iraq, with a salary of $30,000.

Would you teach in Iraq? Doesn’t everyone deserve the chance to learn English, regardless of where they live? Post a comment below…

It doesn’t seem clear whether this is a monthly or yearly salary. But what value do you put on your life? They could offer me a million and I wouldn’t go.

I was in Erbil (also called Arbil) a few months back. The place is quite safe. However, I heard that the university is new and totally disorganized. Nice town. Well worth a visit.

Risk is relative. Not all of Iraq is under seige and you could just as easily get killed by crossing the street in Des Moines, Iowa as you could in Erbil, Iraq. I say, why not?

Beware of the US $50,000 bounty for any westerner to be delivered to any of the local millitas.

When taking into consideration that $30,000 a year is quite average for the Middle East, one would expect more, due to the possible risk factor. Telling someone it’s safe and offering average pay is quite usual as well. A better tasting carrot on the stick may well get better results.
