Teachers' advice > Yemen
"There are lots of language schools in the capital, Sana'a, and a few in other
cities too, especially Aden. Come with a TEFL qualification and preferably a
little experience too, and you should walk into a job.
Yemen is a very strict Muslim country. Men and women do not mix socially. This
makes the mixed-sex language classroom environment something of an anomaly. Most
students in mixed classes are men. The women can be reluctant to do small-group
work with men, and are sometimes shy about speaking at all. Male teachers can
have a lot of fun here getting to know your students, and doing stuff with them
outside class.
There is an increasing number of Yemeni-run women-only institutes here. These
provide a 'safe' environment for women and girls to learn English and are nice
places for female teachers to work. Quality of teaching and management is
variable!
People who come with a flexible and 'learner' attitude are likely to have a
great time!"

"I would like to remind whoever reads this advice to be only my opinion and that
experiences will differ from person to person.
The first thing I would like to advise to those coming from America is that the
sooner you adapt to the society that you choose to teach in outside of your
native country the better you will be as a teacher. Often times you hear people
complaining about social problems with the countries people and that causes one
to become discouraged from teaching and that happens because we don't totally
accept or adapt to the environment. So adapting and accepting will help you love
the experience.
Second, be sure to use all the help that is available from TEFL or ESL assistant
staff whether online or before leaving your country. Taking from the experienced
(ESL / TEFL) teachers will guide you away from making the same mistakes and
spending a lot of money on travel.
So therefore, to all those interested in teaching overseas, just be sure to have
a genuine desire and love for teaching the language and not just making
money..."

Yemen: Travels in Dictionary Land
In this work, the author describes his journey through Yemen, portraying hyrax
hunters and dhow skippers, a noseless regicide, a sword-wielding tyrant with a
passion for Heinz Russian salad, as well as examining the extraordinary history
of the ordinary Yemenis.
