Teachers' advice > Philippines
"Teaching and living in the Philippines can be very rewarding because of the
warmth and hospitality of the Filipinos. They smile a lot, they make you feel
welcome and they speak English well. Although in recent years, English
proficiency in the Philippines has slid down. A lot of educators feel that
because of the nationalization of the medium of instruction (Filipino) in 1985,
English, which used to be the first language of a lot of Filipinos has lost its
ground, especially in rural areas. There are a lot of American franchise
operated restaurants in the Philippines."
