Teachers' advice > Myanmar
"There are very few secondary level (high school) schools but there are some
language centres which will employ native English speakers. Our school employs
qualified native speakers every year and usually has anywhere between 8-12 expat
teachers to teach English mostly at middle and high school levels. Recruiting is
carried out through the Internet or locally when expats visit our school and are
interviewed and recruited.
Accommodation is available in the form of apartments, rents ranging from US
100-450p/m, the latter being furnished. Depending on schools which are either
full day or morning-afternoon shifts, work may start at around 7:30-8:00am to
12:30pm or 1:00-5:30pm or 8:00-2:30pm or variations of these.
Cost of living is cheap if you cook for your self but cheap meals can be
obtained at local food stalls, prices ranging from US 1-3 per meal. Meals at
restaurants are more expensive. Local customs need not effect expat teachers.
Only do not get involved in local politics, this is taboo.
There are night clubs at hotels and restaurants, and karaoke bars in Yangon. You
can travel quite freely around the country now, there are plenty of places to
visit."
