Country info and advice - Chile
The following comments are from teachers who have taught, or are currently teaching, in Chile. If you are a teacher and have some advice to share, please add it here.
I've been in Chile for a year now. I
started working with The Homework Club and Imperial English in November of 2010 and I´ve
really enjoyed it. I primarily work with children but I also have classes with adults too.
I like the variety. The people are great and I love my classes.
There is also a branch of Spanish learning (www.spanishnow.cl) and the classes are offered to
the teachers for very cheap. They have saved me!!
There is a pretty big expat community here and there are several groups that meet for socials
with both Chileans and with foreigners.
The weather in Chile is great, although right now it`s winter, there are about 9 months of the
year when the weather is gorgeous!!
The skiing is amazing! There are 4 really good ski lodges and the mountains are so close!!
Travel in Santiago is pretty easy. There is public transportation to almost any place in the city.
I have lived here for a year now without a car and had no problems. The metro runs about every
minute or two depending on the day and time, and the buses are slightly less regular but pretty good too.
It costs around 500 CLP (about one dollar) for one trip including if you need to switch from the metro
to the bus, so its pretty cheap. Plus, there are ALWAYS taxis, if need be, however, more expensive.
The best neighborhood I've found to live in to be close to the centro and in a safe area is Providencia.
Las Condes is also nice but more expensive. A great place to find housing is of course craigslist but also www.compartodepto.cl
Hope this helps!!
